“Always Remember, your focus determines your reality.”- George Lucas
I went three months without SOCIAL MEDIA! It was not easy, but it was totally worth it.
I decided to go on this social media hiatus because of the New Year. 2017 was one of the best years of my life and because I was determined to keep that momentum going with 2018, I wanted to bring in this year different from the prior years. If you want different results, you must take different actions. My biggest goal for this year is to focus on myself. I want to direct my attention to my life, my health, and my goals.
As much as I love social media, I knew this was necessary. Social media demands a lot of your attention and could be a huge distraction. It focuses on what is happening around the world and what everyone else is doing. When your head is filled with all that content, it could be hard to focus. So I decided if I really wanted to commit to significant change, I needed to rid all distractions.
Though social media is not the only distraction in my life, it is the biggest one. I turned off all my notifications and I signed out all my accounts. I then wrote down all the things I wanted to accomplish this year. After that, I reviewed all the things that were still pending or put off completely. Things like books I wanted to read, movies that have been on my DVR box for months, certifications I needed to study for, things I wanted to try, and most importantly new endeavors I was seeking. I thought it would be hard, but it wasn’t. After about a week, I had no thoughts of social media.
So here I am. I returned back to social media a few weeks ago and I am proud to say that I have made great progress towards the things I put off and my goals. It was also a great emotional break as sometimes, social media could be overwhelming. An awesome feeling arises from doing things that seem impossible. As I continue to strive for the things I desire this year, I hope you will too.
Let me know in the comments what practices you use to focus.
XO

I soooo know what you mean. I took a break from social media through most of March and it was so wonderful. Although I love blogging more than anything, it’s great to eat a meal or go on vacation without sharing it with the world some times.

Good on you! I quit Facebook for the longest time, and it was so peaceful. I have to use it more now for blogging reasons, but it felt refreshing not being bombarded with information I didn’t care about, 24/7!

It’s great to challenge our will power doing these kind of abstinence exercises, it can be done with anything non productive that is taken over your life. I can’t stay without social media, it’s part of my job as a marketer hahaha but I’v done it with other things like ‘alcohol’ 🙂

I love the commitment – 3 months is outstanding. The other day cell phone service went down in the area for less than 24 hours and locally it seemed the world almost stopped. It made all the papers, the local news and people were calling 911. They had to tell people to STOP CALLING 911 to report about their phone service. I love the idea, I think I will give it a try myself…but due to my work, I’m going to make it 90 minutes at a time weekly.
