Letter To My Younger Self

“If I knew then, what I know now…”

IMG_8515

Dear Katherine,

It’s me – you. I finally gathered the courage to do this. Well here goes…

I hope that you know that you have your whole life ahead of you. Don’t worry so much about the future, just be in the present and make it beautiful. I know that may be challenging since you’re always anxious, but you will come out on the other side of your current situations. Just enjoy being young, wild, and carefree. Enjoy school – adulting is not as fun as it looked on the movies.

The confidence you lacked all your life will eventually come. It won’t come from dating that guy, or having a ton of friends, or evening buying all that materialistic stuff, it will come from within. You will wake up one day with a purpose and you will realize you could do anything you could put your mind to. You will keep defying the odds.

I hope that you know that time heals all. That pain that you feel from feeling like an outcast will pass. Time will not only make you feel better, it will also teach you how to embrace that part of you that others criticized you for. So keep rocking on to your “Ryan Cabrera” and “Boys Like Girls”. Don’t worry too much about what others think of you. Most of those people won’t matter in the next few years. And to add to that, you will eventually find your tribe of true friends and they will never make you feel anything less than amazing. That guy that you thought you would never get over; you will forget you ever met him. Your heart will heal.

Don’t worry that you will not attend a university and will attend a community college unlike all your friends. Passaic County Community College will become the birth of a fearless woman. It will turn that introvert into an extrovert. And your love for creating your own projects, will lead you to pursuing a career in Broadcast Media.

I hope you know that all the things you seek, you will find. You will live, laugh, and love. You will discover the adventurer in you. You will go places you dreamt of, develop a sense of wonder, want to learn about everything, and do things you believed was impossible. You will cherish those summer nights, you will be grateful for the struggles, and the tears you cry will only make your stronger.

As hard as it is, just be yourself. Keep being kind and keep trying your best. You are worth it and your journey will be brilliant.

P.S. You favorite song with still be “Breakaway” by Kelly Clarkson in ten years.

XO

Katherine

This is the type of thing people should do and give to their kids. If my daughter knew how I worried about stuff like that when I was younger, and I could show her “look at me now”, I think it would make a hell of a lot of difference.

  5. That Kelly Clarkson song is still dope! This letter would have definitely eased the anxiety of our younger selves. I wish people had more compassion for those in their teen years — those can be the toughest. Thanks for sharing!

This is beautifully written!! If we only had all that wisdom when we were younger, I think a lot of us would be in better places in our lives, but sometimes it takes a while to get to that point. It took me years to see that I should cherish things more.

Congratulations! And this is an awesome realization. Use these realizations to guide you through life. You are unique, exceptional, important. Make your own mark, even if nobody notices you. I am already 43 now. Not really rich not really popular or successful. But I keep doing what I am doing. I believe this is where God planted me. Flourish wherever you are. 😀
